Where your skin recovers, repairs and renews
While your morning routine is focused on protecting your skin from the day ahead, your evening routine is when your skin has the opportunity to recover from daily environmental stress and support its natural renewal processes.
It's also the ideal time to use active ingredients such as retinoids and exfoliating acids, as they aren't competing with sun exposure and can work alongside your skin's overnight repair cycle.
Your routine doesn't need to be lengthy to be effective. A simple, consistent evening routine will often deliver better long-term results than a complicated one used occasionally.
Your Ideal Evening Routine
Step 1 – First Cleanse (If Wearing SPF or Makeup)
Begin with an oil-based cleanser, cleansing balm or micellar cleanser to dissolve sunscreen, makeup and excess oil.
This first cleanse helps break down products that water-based cleansers alone may not completely remove.
Step 2 – Second Cleanse
Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities, sweat, pollution and cleanser residue.
If you haven't worn sunscreen or makeup that day, one gentle cleanse is often sufficient.
Step 3 – Toner or Essence (Optional)
A toner or essence can provide an extra layer of hydration and help prepare the skin for the products that follow.
This step is optional and isn't essential for an effective routine.
Step 4 – Apply One Active Ingredient
Evening is generally the best time to use active ingredients such as:
- Retinoids
- Exfoliating Acids (AHAs or BHAs)
- Azelaic Acid (where appropriate)
Choose one active ingredient for your routine rather than using several at once.
Not sure which active ingredient is right for you? See our Understanding Active Ingredients guide.
Step 5 – Eye Cream (Optional)
An eye cream can provide additional hydration to the delicate skin around the eyes, although it isn't essential if your moisturiser is suitable for this area.
Step 6 – Moisturise
A moisturiser helps support the skin barrier overnight while reducing moisture loss.
This is an important step, particularly when using active ingredients.
Step 7 – Facial Oil (Optional)
If your skin feels particularly dry or dehydrated, a facial oil can be applied as the final step to help seal in moisture.
Facial oils should always be applied after moisturiser—not before.
Why Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing isn't necessary for everyone every evening, but it can be particularly beneficial if you've worn:
- Sunscreen
- Makeup
- Water-resistant skincare products
- Heavy environmental pollution
The first cleanse removes surface products, while the second cleanse cleans the skin itself.
If you've spent most of the day indoors without sunscreen or makeup, one gentle cleanse is usually enough.
Why Evening Is the Best Time for Active Ingredients
Many active ingredients can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Using them in the evening allows your skin to benefit from their effects overnight while reducing unnecessary sun exposure.
Most people don't need to use active ingredients every evening.
Using them 2–4 nights per week, depending on your skin type and tolerance, is often enough to achieve good results.
Adjusting Your Routine for Your Skin Type
Oily Skin
- Double cleanse if you've worn sunscreen or makeup.
- Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser.
- Don't skip moisturiser, as dehydrated skin may produce more oil.
Dry Skin
- A cream or hydrating cleanser is often sufficient.
- Choose a richer moisturiser.
- Finish with a facial oil if your skin needs additional nourishment.
Combination Skin
- Use lightweight hydrating products across the face.
- Apply richer moisturisers only where your skin feels drier if needed.
Sensitive Skin
- Introduce active ingredients slowly.
- Leave recovery nights between active treatments.
- Choose fragrance-free, barrier-supporting products wherever possible.
Normal Skin
Most skin types tolerate a wide variety of products.
Focus on maintaining a balanced routine rather than adding unnecessary steps.

The 5-Minute Evening Routine
Busy evenings happen—and that's perfectly fine.
Evening Essentials
- Gentle Cleanser
- Moisturiser
Once your skin is comfortable with your routine, you can introduce one active ingredient a few evenings each week.
Remember, consistency matters far more than perfection.
Common Evening Routine Mistakes
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Using several active ingredients in the same routine.
- Skipping moisturiser after using exfoliating acids or retinoids.
- Applying facial oil before serums or moisturiser.
- Introducing multiple new products at the same time.
- Expecting overnight results—most active ingredients take several weeks of consistent use before noticeable improvements are seen.
If Your Skin Feels Irritated
If your skin becomes:
- Tight
- Dry
- Red
- Sensitive
- Flaky
- Uncomfortable
Simplify your routine.
Pause active ingredients and return to a gentle cleanser, a barrier-supporting moisturiser and (during the day) broad-spectrum SPF.
Once your skin feels comfortable again, reintroduce active ingredients gradually—one at a time.

The best routine isn't the one with the most products—it's the one you can follow consistently.
