Set your skin up for the day ahead
A morning skincare routine is designed to protect your skin from the day's environmental stressors, including sunlight, pollution and everyday exposure to the elements, while keeping it hydrated, balanced and comfortable.
Your routine doesn't need to be complicated to be effective. In fact, a simple routine followed consistently is often more beneficial than one with lots of products used occasionally.
Your Ideal Morning Routine
Step 1 – Cleanse
Start your day with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight sweat, excess oil and any residue left from your evening skincare routine.
Choose a cleanser that cleans effectively without leaving your skin feeling tight or stripped.
Step 2 – Apply an Antioxidant Serum (Optional but Recommended)
An antioxidant serum, such as Vitamin C, helps protect the skin against everyday environmental stress while supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
Best for:
- Dull skin
- Uneven skin tone
- Skin longevity
Step 3 – Eye Cream (Optional)
The skin around the eyes is thinner and often shows signs of tiredness or dehydration first.
An eye cream can help hydrate this delicate area, although it isn't essential if your regular moisturiser is suitable around the eyes.
Step 4 – Moisturise
A moisturiser helps maintain hydration, supports the skin barrier and prepares the skin for sunscreen.
Choose a formula that suits your skin type and the season.
Step 5 – Apply Broad-Spectrum SPF
This is the most important step in any morning skincare routine.
Daily sunscreen helps protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of premature skin ageing, pigmentation and sun damage.
Apply sunscreen generously as the final step in your skincare routine before applying makeup.
Top Tip: Most adults need approximately two finger lengths of sunscreen (for the face and neck) to achieve the level of protection stated on the product.
Why the Order Matters
Skincare products work best when applied from the lightest texture to the richest.
Applying products in the correct order allows each layer to absorb properly.
Always remember:
- Lightweight serums before creams.
- Moisturiser before facial oil.
- SPF is always the final step in your morning skincare routine.

The 5-Minute Morning Routine
If you're short on time, keep it simple.
Morning Essentials
- Gentle Cleanser (or rinse with water if appropriate for your skin)
- Moisturiser
- Broad-Spectrum SPF
Everything else—such as antioxidant serums or eye creams—can be added when time allows.
Consistency matters far more than having lots of steps.
Common Morning Routine Mistakes
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Skipping sunscreen on cloudy days.
- Thinking you're protected indoors—UVA rays can pass through window glass.
- Applying SPF before moisturiser.
- Using too little sunscreen.
- Using strong exfoliating acids or retinoids every morning, unless specifically recommended by a healthcare professional.
