Building a Routine & Layering Order

Getting your skincare products to work together—not against each other.

Layering simply means the order in which you apply your skincare products. Following the correct order helps each product absorb properly and perform as intended, while reducing the risk of irritation or unnecessary product waste.

As a general rule, apply products from the lightest texture to the richest. This allows lighter, water-based formulas to absorb before heavier creams or oils create a protective layer on the skin.

The Correct Layering Order

Apply your skincare in the following order:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner or Essence (optional)
  3. Water-Based Serums (e.g. Vitamin C, Niacinamide or Hyaluronic Acid)
  4. Treatment or Active Ingredient (such as a Retinoid or Exfoliating Acid)
  5. Eye Cream (optional)
  6. Moisturiser
  7. Facial Oil (optional – evening only)
  8. SPF (morning only and always the final step)

Tip: Think thinnest to thickest. Applying a rich cream before a lightweight serum can reduce how well the serum absorbs.

A Simple Morning Routine

A consistent morning routine helps protect your skin throughout the day.

  1. Gentle Cleanser
  2. Antioxidant Serum (such as Vitamin C)
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Broad-Spectrum SPF 30 or higher

Remember: Sunscreen should always be the final step in your morning skincare routine.

A Simple Evening Routine

Evening is the best time to focus on skin repair and active ingredients.

  1. Cleanser (double cleanse if you've worn makeup or sunscreen)
  2. Toner or Essence (optional)
  3. One Active Ingredient (such as a Retinoid or Exfoliating Acid)
  4. Moisturiser
  5. Facial Oil (if required for extra nourishment)

Less is often more. Using one well-chosen active ingredient consistently is usually more effective than layering several together.

How Long Should You Wait Between Products?

Most skincare products absorb quickly, so there's no need to wait several minutes between every step.

As a general guide:

  • Serums and toners: Wait around 30–60 seconds before applying the next product.
  • Retinoids or exfoliating acids: If your skin is sensitive, waiting 10–20 minutes before applying moisturiser may help reduce irritation.
  • Moisturisers and facial oils: Can usually be applied once the previous layer feels absorbed.

The goal isn't to create long gaps between products—it's simply to allow each layer enough time to settle before applying the next.

Where Do Weekly Treatments Fit In?

Some products aren't designed for everyday use.

Exfoliating Masks or Peels
Use these instead of your usual exfoliating acid or retinoid—not alongside them.

Sheet Masks
Apply after cleansing and before your serums.

Clay Masks
Apply to clean, dry skin before the rest of your skincare routine. Rinse thoroughly before continuing with your usual products.

Common Layering Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes to get the best from your skincare routine:

  • Applying facial oil before serums, which may reduce absorption.
  • Applying SPF before moisturiser—SPF should always be the final morning step.
  • Using too many active ingredients in one routine, increasing the risk of irritation.
  • Skipping moisturiser after exfoliating acids or retinoids, which can leave the skin feeling dry and uncomfortable.
  • Introducing several new products at the same time, making it difficult to identify what's working—or causing irritation.

If You Prefer a Simple Routine

A skincare routine doesn't need ten steps to be effective.

For many people, a simple, consistent routine is all that's needed.

Morning

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturiser
  • Broad-Spectrum SPF

Evening

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturiser
  • One Active Ingredient (2–3 evenings per week once your skin has adjusted)

You can always add additional products gradually as your skin's needs change.

Building a Routine That Works for You

There isn't a single skincare routine that's right for everyone.

The best routine is one that's based on:

  • Your skin type
  • Your skin concerns
  • The strength of your skin barrier
  • Your lifestyle and daily habits

Consistency is far more important than complexity. A simple routine that you follow every day will almost always deliver better long-term results than an elaborate routine that's difficult to maintain.
